A cable gland seals the hole where a cable enters an electrical box, control panel or machine enclosure — holding the cable in place and keeping out water and dust. It rarely gets noticed, but leave it out and the whole enclosure's water and dust rating can fail.

What a cable gland is
In most electrical and telecom installations, cables run in and out of a metal or plastic enclosure. Left unsealed, that entry hole lets the cable slip or vibrate loose, and lets rain, moisture and dust into the enclosure where they can damage the circuitry inside. A cable gland threads into that entry point, clamps the cable firmly in place, and closes the gap with a rubber gasket to give the enclosure its water and dust resistance.
Structure and how it works
An Allpum cable gland has five main parts. A lock nut secures the body from inside the enclosure, a gasket seals the joint between the enclosure wall and the body, the threaded body itself passes through the wall, a clamping ring grips the cable, and a sealing nut is tightened last to press the cable jacket and complete the watertight seal. Tightening the sealing nut makes the clamping ring squeeze the cable evenly — holding it firmly in place while closing the gap between the cable and the body.
Where it is used
- Cable entries on switchboards, distribution boards and control panels
- Power-line entries on outdoor lighting, signage and signal-light housings
- Solar inverters, combiner boxes and other outdoor power-generation equipment
- Wiring entries on industrial machine and motor control boxes, factory automation gear
- Telecom and network equipment enclosures, outdoor CCTV housings
How to choose a size
Pick a cable gland by the outer diameter of the cable you are using. Too small an outer diameter for the range and the seal will not close fully even when tightened; too large and the cable either will not fit through or will strain the clamping ring. Measure the cable's outer diameter with calipers or a tape, then pick the model whose "Cable Ø" range in the table below includes that measurement.
| Model | Thread | Cable Ø (mm) | Thread Ø L1 (mm) | Thread length L2 (mm) | Spanner (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AP-PG7 | PG7SL-6 | 3 ~ 6.5 | 12.5 | 15 | 17 / 15 |
| AP-PG9 | PG9-7.5 | 4 ~ 8 | 15.2 | 8.2 | 22 / 19 |
| AP-PG11 | PG11-10 | 5 ~ 10 | 18.6 | 10 | 24 / 22 |
| AP-PG13.5 | PG13.5-12.5 | 6 ~ 12.5 | 20.4 | 10 | 27 / 24 |
| AP-PG16 | PG16-14 | 8.5 ~ 14 | 22.5 | 10.8 | 30 / 27 |
| AP-PG21 | PG21-17.5 | 12.5 ~ 18 | 28.3 | 12 | 36 / 33 |
| AP-PG29 | PG29-25 | 17 ~ 25 | 37 | 12 | 46 / 41 |
| AP-PG36 | PG36-31 | 24 ~ 32 | 47 | 15 | 57 / 52 |
How to install
- ① Check the size Measure the cable's outer diameter and pick the matching model from the table above.
- ② Secure to the enclosure Insert the body through the enclosure hole and tighten the lock nut from inside to secure it to the wall.
- ③ Feed the cable through Slide the sealing nut onto the cable first, then feed the cable through the body.
- ④ Tighten the sealing nut Tighten the sealing nut to the correct torque so the clamping ring grips the cable evenly. Overtightening can crush the cable jacket.
- ⑤ Check the seal Check that the gasket sits evenly against the enclosure surface and that the cable does not pull free.
For outdoor or wet installations where sealing matters, it is worth doing a quick spray test after installation. When several cables enter one enclosure, use a correctly sized gland for each hole individually to keep every entry sealed.
